Sport & exercise medicine
Sport and exercise medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, treatment and management of illness, injury and other medical complications related to participation in sport and exercise.
Sports medicine physicians have experience in the diagnosis and treatment of injuries in muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones; and also advise on the management and prevention of injuries in all active individuals. They may also treat chronic illnesses that can affect physical performance, such as asthma and diabetes. Sports physicians treat all medical complications that an active person may encounter, from musculoskeletal injuries, cardiology (heart) issues, sub-optimal performance, and exercise-induced asthma, to screening for cardiac abnormalities and diabetes.
biokinetics
Biokinetics is the science of movement and the application of exercise in rehabilitative treatment. The primary function of Biokinetics is to improve physical functioning and health care through exercise.
Biokinetics is concerned with health promotion, the maintenance of physical abilities and final phase rehabilitation, using the prescription of scientifically-based physical activity programmes. A Biokineticist is a clinical exercise specialist who facilitates a person’s improvement in physical well-being and quality of life through individualised scientific assessment and the prescription of exercise in rehabilitative treatment. The aim being to prevent or intervene with certain ailments and to enhance performance (sport and work). Biokineticists evaluate and measure body posture, body composition, blood pressure, glucose levels, lung function, heart rate, fitness, muscle strength, endurance, power, flexibility and other health screenings.

sport science
Sport Scientists are specialists in the application of scientific principles and techniques to assist coaches and athletes improve their performance at an individual level or within the context of a team environment. Sport Science is broadly made up of three areas of speciality – these are Sports Physiology, Strength & Conditioning, and Sports Biomechanics.
Sports Physiology involves the assessment of anthropometric, physiological, and metabolic demands of sport training and competition, developing sports-specific physiological assessments, monitoring training and competition loads and providing advice on recovery and regeneration techniques.
Strength & Conditioning includes assessing the physical fitness demands of sport training and competition, developing individual and/or team training goals and priorities following identification of physical strengths and weaknesses, designing and implementing tailored strength and conditioning training programmes to enhance sports performance, and integrating strength and conditioning training with the sport-specific, technical and tactical training of athletes.
Sports Biomechanics assesses sports techniques using reliable and valid technologies to improve an athlete’s performance, reduce injury risk, or monitor progression during the injury rehabilitation process. It is used to measure an athlete’s force production abilities, as well as external forces and mechanical load experienced by the athlete in various conditions (e.g. task- and intensity-specific, different footwear, surfaces, fatigue, technique modifications).

sport psychology
Sport psychology uses psychological principles to assist athletes in achieving their best performance. Sport Psychology may assist athletes on two different levels:
On one level athletes may request performance enhancement - here the focus would be to assist the individual to self-actualise within the sport environment. This could focus on addressing fear of failure, dealing with injury, fear of re-injury, self-confidence, dealing with pressure and the termination of the athletic career to name a few.
Sport psychology may, on a different level, also assist athletes who present with difficulties in other contexts of their lives, for example, interpersonal relationships, adjustment difficulties, trauma, grief, anxiety and depression which has a detrimental impact on their athletic performance.
