SEMLI Sport Science Unit, at the University of Pretoria is looking for an experienced Sport Scientist with hockey and cricket expertise. This role combines high level sport science service delivery, teaching, mentorship, and research.
Are you a driven and experienced Sport Scientist ready to take your expertise to the next level? The Sport Science Unit at Sport, Exercise Medicine and Lifestyle Institute (SEMLI) at the University of Pretoria is looking to recruit a Sport Science professional to join their team from April 2025.
We are seeking a dedicated professional with hockey and cricket expertise to contribute to high-performance athlete development. This role offers the opportunity to integrate cutting- edge sport science techniques—ranging from biomechanics and physiology to data analysis and athlete monitoring—within a leading university environment. Responsibilities:
- Sport Science service delivery encompassing sport physiology, biomechanics, data analysis, athlete monitoring and strength and conditioning
- Practical tutorial teaching assistance
- Part-time lecturing on an ad hoc basis
- Mentorship to UP students
- Contribute to research activities
- This role will require working in multiple sports codes, fully immersed in the performance program(s) and includes day-today athlete monitoring and assessment, session implementation as well as competition support
Minimum Requirements:
- Honours/Master’s degree in Sport Science or a suitable equivalent postgraduate qualification
- First aid and/or basic life support
- At least 3-5 years of proven experience working as an applied Sport Science practitioner
- Ability to lead a program, problem-solve and deliver a high standard of sport science outputs
- Ability to implement GPS tracking (Catapult, Polar)
- Evidence of leadership experience or potential
- Knowledge in athlete profiling, monitoring and GPS tracking
- Data analysis competency, working with Power BI, R and Excel
- Computer literacy in MS-Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Must be willing and available to travel and work over weekends
Desirable requirements (Exposure to one or a combination of the following):
- Strength and conditioning certification (e.g. CSCS or equivalent)
- Anthropometry certification (e.g. ISAK or equivalent)
- Research understanding
- Professional memberships
- Competency to run VO2max testing and similar physiological tests

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- High standards of professional and ethical conduct
- Desire to work in a coach-driven and inter-disciplinary system
- An enthusiastic and supportive attitude towards coach and athlete development
- Ability to apply current Sport Science knowledge
- Ability to work under time and performance pressure
Contract & remuneration:
- Permanent contract with remuneration to be based on market-related benchmark.
